Exchange Visitor Program Welcome Brochure
Apply for the J-1 Visa
Visiting Scholars and Sponsoring Departments are responsible for requesting a DS-2019
from the Office
of International Students and Scholars (OISS). Once the OISS processes the Sponsorship
Request form,
the OISS issues the DS-2019, and emails the document to the VS and the sponsorship
department. The
VS uses the DS-2019 to apply for a J-1 visa at a U.S. consulate or embassy in their
home country (i.e.,
country of citizenship or permanent residence).
Note: Canadian citizens do not need to apply for a visa but must pay the SEVIS fee.
Health Insurance
Your wellbeing is a priority to us and our government! The U.S. Department of State
requires that the
exchange visitor obtain health, accident, medical evacuation, and repatriation of
remains insurance. The
insurance policies must cover the exchange visitor and all accompanying dependents
for the EV’s entire
program duration as indicated by the dates noted on the DS-2019. Any exchange visitor
who willfully
refuses to comply with this requirement shall be considered to be in violation of
their exchange visitor
status. EV’s will need to provide proof of insurance coverage from one of the preapproved
insurance
companies reviewed by OISS.
J-1 Visiting Scholars at CLU are required to enroll in one of the preapproved providers.
