Turning Good Intentions into Effective Leadership: Upcoming Institute Teaches Nonprofit Board Members to Be Better Leaders
Service on a nonprofit board of directors is a meaningful way of giving back to the community and society. Having a strong, well-functioning board is key for successful nonprofits, and being a member of this kind of board can be one of the most satisfying experiences of a lifetime.
Yet many volunteer board members find that there is a lot more to nonprofit board leadership than they realized when they signed up.
To support the success of Ventura County nonprofit organizations and their boards of directors, the Center for Nonprofit Leadership at California Lutheran University has announced its 2018 Board Leadership Institute. This six-month certificate program will enhance the knowledge and skills of leadership teams comprised of nonprofit board members and their head of staff (CEO or Executive Director). The teams will attend monthly morning workshops on topics such as the board/CEO partnership, strategic planning, development and fundraising, and financial oversight.
“Leading a successful nonprofit requires special skills and an understanding of the unique environment in which they operate,” says Bryan McQueeney, Chief Executive Officer of Ride On Therapeutic Horsemanship. “The Board Leadership Institute turns well-intentioned leaders into informed and effective leaders.”
According to Kate McLean, Chair of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership’s Advisory Board, “The legal and fiduciary responsibilities of nonprofit board members have become ever more complex, and the stakes are higher than ever. This Institute is designed to help board members and their staff leaders navigate this challenging landscape using the best practices of the field.”
The Board Leadership Institute begins in January 2018, and the six monthly workshops take place at Cal Lutheran’s Oxnard campus. Space is limited, and participation is by application, with an early application deadline of December 1. Those interested in applying should visit callutheran.edu/centers/nonprofit/bli.
As the only management training center of its kind in Ventura County, the Center for Nonprofit Leadership provides practical and affordable professional development opportunities for nonprofit leaders. The Center focuses on offering training, technical assistance, and access to research materials to help strengthen the leadership of nonprofit organizations throughout Ventura County and beyond. For more information, visit callutheran.edu/nonprofit or contact the Center at (805) 493-3740 or email nonprofit@callutheran.edu.
