We all understand that graduate school can be academically rigorous and overwhelming.
We can feel socially isolated, particularly in the solitary moments of writing and
research. We also know how essential it is for graduate students to feel connected
within a community of learners, writers, and researchers at Cal Lu. Glode (1998, as
cited in Casanave & Li, 2008) describes graduate school as a unique process of "double
socialization," where students are simultaneously socialized directly into the role
of being graduate students and prepared for professional life in their chosen field.
We know the process is not always transparent and can be very difficult to navigate
by ourselves.
The Graduate Writing Community is created to support graduate students by providing
networking opportunities and space for peer collaboration as they navigate their graduate
studies at Cal Lu. As this community continues to grow, we expect to see an increasing
focus on student-led events and activities for graduate students.
All graduate students are welcome to join us. Check out our schedules for monthly
writing retreats and special events. Any suggestions for making the events more relevant
to graduate students are welcome.
