Personal injury law plays a critical role in ensuring justice and compensation for individuals who have suffered harm due to negligence or wrongdoing. However, vulnerable populations—such as the elderly, disabled, or economically disadvantaged—often encounter unique obstacles when navigating the legal system. Understanding these challenges is essential for advocating effectively on their behalf and ensuring that the principles of justice and equity are upheld.
Despite these challenges, personal injury law aims to protect the rights of all individuals, regardless of their vulnerability. Legal advocates must be aware of these specific needs and work to address them, ensuring that all clients receive fair and equitable treatment. By promoting accessibility, providing tailored support, and advocating for systemic changes, the legal community can help bridge these gaps and promote justice for vulnerable populations.
We invite university and high school students who have been accepted to an accredited college or university to engage with this important issue by participating in our scholarship essay contest. Share your insights and perspectives on how personal injury law can better serve vulnerable populations and address the challenges they face.

In today's world, college students do not have it easy. In addition to the skyrocketing costs of college tuition, the amounts students will need to pay for expenses such as housing and transportation have also increased significantly. Many students struggle to cover these costs and ensure that they can receive the proper education and pursue their career goals. Students who attend college in states or regions of the country that are far away from their families will often face additional challenges and increased expenses, and they may be concerned that they will be unprepared to address these concerns.
At Fawell & Fawell, we understand the issues that affect students who travel to other states to attend college, and we have created a scholarship program to provide assistance for these students. Through the Fawell & Fawell Out-of-State Student Scholarship, we award $1,000 each semester to a qualified student who will be pursuing educational opportunities in a location outside of the state where they attended high school or where their parents currently live. Scholarship winners can use this money to pay for tuition, housing, other educational costs, or transportation-related expenses.
If you are planning to apply for the Fawell & Fawell Out-of-State Student Scholarship, please see the eligibility criteria and application instructions below. The deadline to apply for the Spring 2025 scholarship is February 19, 2025. Please contact us at scholarship@fawelllaw.com with any questions you may have about our scholarship program or the application process.

- Be above the age of 17.
- Be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident.
Application Requirements
Students can apply for the scholarship by submitting the form below. An applicant must provide identifying information showing that they are an out-of-state student, as well as proof of enrollment and documentation of their GPA. Documents that can be submitted to show that the requirements have been met include an acceptance letter and an academic transcript.
Applicants must also submit an essay of at least 200 to 300 words that answers the following prompt:
What challenges and difficulties have affected you as an out-of-state student? Have you struggled with leaving your family and settling into an unfamiliar environment? How do you plan to overcome these challenges and achieve success in your academic efforts?
How We Evaluate Applications
We closely review every application submitted to ensure that applicants have met all requirements. We look at:

Cohen & Cohen, has been protecting the rights of auto accident victims and their families for over 25 years. Our dedication, skill, tenacity, and compassion, for the people we serve and for what we do, has made us one of the top personal injury law firms in Washington, DC. We have seen auto accidents devastate families in many different ways. From losing a loved one to losing abilities, to mounting financial debt and more, an auto-accident can change peoples lives for the worse in just moments.
Throughout our time serving them, Cohen & Cohen’s admiration for auto-accident survivors, and for the friends and family that take care of them, has continued to grow. To this end, our law firm has created the Cohen & Cohen Auto Accident Survivor & Friends Scholarship, for a student who has been a victim of an auto accident and did not let this stop them from pursuing their academic dreams; or for a friend or family member who stood by an auto accident victim in their time of need and was inspired to pursue their own academic goals.
We know that no amount of money can really make up for the many losses auto accidents cause but we hope that by funding an inspiring survivor’s education, or that of a friend or family member’s, we will make the financial part of their education just a little bit easier. Life is full of difficulties and challenges to overcome but we hope that with our help, the recipient’s educational financial hardship will not be one of them, or at least will be lessened.
Even though auto accidents often take away precious things, we know that survivor’s often get a new aspect and appreciation for life. We believe that by funding a survivor or someone who has stood by one, we will be funding someone who plans to try to make the most out of their lives in ways they might not have known about were it not for their experience with an auto-accident.
Eligibility Criteria
This scholarship is open to any student who is currently enrolled in accredited undergraduate, graduate or professional program. All eligible candidates must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 or above.

For a young person, losing a family member can be a devastating experience. However, losing multiple family members all at once is almost unthinkable. That’s what happened to Dexter Gardiner, who on July 9, 2006 lost six family members in a tragic car accident on the Bronx River Parkway.
Yet despite the loss, Dexter chose to use the tragedy as a way to help others who have experienced similar situations in losing beloved family members unexpectedly. Needless to say, for those left behind, especially children whose college education may suddenly be in doubt due to financial concerns, the world can suddenly seem very uncertain.
However, thanks to Dexter choosing to start the Gardiner Foundation, children in these unthinkable circumstances can rest easy, knowing they can receive financial help for their education. By teaming up with Jeff Korek and his partners here at the law firm of Gersowitz, Libo, and Korek, a scholarship of $1,500 will be awarded annually to as many as five deserving students. By doing so, we at Gersowitz, Libo, and Korek can do our part to help ease the financial burden a student’s family may have in trying to help them realize their dreams of higher education.
Gardiner Foundation Events
To help families in need, we at Gersowitz, Libo, and Korek work hand-in-hand with the Gardiner Foundation to sponsor a number of events. These include:
- Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway
- Annual Basketball Classic Tournament
Whether helping more than 300 families win a free Thanksgiving meal or enjoying free entertainment, food and beverages, and exciting action on the basketball court, we at Gersowitz, Libo, and Korek take great pride in partnering with the Gardiner Foundation to help local families not only with financial and scholarship assistance, but also with help obtaining school supplies, spiritual mentoring, and burial assistance if needed.
Dedicated to Helping the Community
By partnering with the Gardiner Foundation, we at Gersowitz, Libo, and Korek are more dedicated than ever to helping those in our community overcome tragedy and discover happiness and achievement in their lives. Because we are a personal injury firm that deals with family tragedies on a daily basis, we realize just how important financial resources can be to a family struggling with sudden loss. If your family is in need of attorneys who can help you with a personal injury claim, contact us here at Gersowitz, Libo, and Korek for a free consultation, and let us help you get the financial compensation you and your family need and deserve.
Awarding Scholarships
Once we and the Gardiner Foundation have looked over all the applications and determined those we feel are the most deserving, the winning students and their families will be contacted. And when it comes time to award the scholarships, the ceremony will be held at the Gardiner Foundation Basketball Classic at St. James Park in late August.
