What Now? A Student Film for Advanced Cinema Production
What Now(?) is a short romantic drama film about a young couple in the aftermath of a disastrous break-up, and how they desire the chance to start over again, but then ultimately decide to part ways. This was one of the chosen short film productions for David Grannis’ Advanced Cinema class last fall semester. I wrote the film as a cautionary tale based on my own experiences about toxicity in relationships, and the importance of communication between all of us. I wanted to portray the journey of this young couple fairly but also equally, by showing both of the characters’ flaws and how it was affecting their relationship. One of the key shots I was really proud of was this scene transition that jumped from the present to the past. To achieve this effect, we used a white corrugated board held on a c-stand, and then slowly dollied the camera past the board. This gave the effect that the camera was moving through the wall, and it helped create this passage of time between scenes. Overall the experience working on this film was educational and eye opening. It gave me the opportunity to work with professional equipment and grow as a collaborative storyteller so that one day, I might be able to pursue filmmaking as a career after college.

Life of the Party: Short Film
Life of the Party is a drama about two friends, Max and Shannon, who arrive at a friend’s house party. Shannon becomes distressed and concerned with Max’s underlining alcoholic/ binge drinking problem at the beginning of the night; she even reaches out to a mutual friend for advice, and ultimately seeks his help. As the night goes on Max’s drinking issue is highlighted more and more, climaxing as he attempts to drive himself and a lady “friend” home. Shannon fed up with his antics calls him out on his actions, takes his keys, and leaves them stranded for the night. The following morning Max wakes up to not only the shame of what he got himself involved in last night, but finds out that Shannon was killed that night; hit by a drunk driver. Life of the Partywas originally written for Advanced Cinema, but was eventually filmed for an independent study. This film was made to not only teach students the process of what goes into producing a short film, but to also spread an important message about buzzed/ drunk driving and how one’s consequence don’t just affect themselves, but others around them.
