Reel Madness: Loving as Madness With As Good as It Gets
Preus-Brandt Forum
One portraying a man with Don Juan's personality and the other a man with obsessive-compulsive disorder, Johnny Depp and Jack Nicholson reveal in two Oscar-nominated films that the "best part of love is losing all sense of reality." Marlon Brando and Faye Dunaway co-star with Depp in “Don Juan DeMarco” (1994), and Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear join Nicholson in “As Good as It Gets” (1997). On each of two evenings, the Reel Madness series will show a film, followed by discussion by a panel of CLU professors from various disciplines.
On this second evening, “As Good as It Gets” will be shown. Academy Award Winning film in which an author (Jack Nicolson), a gay artist (Greg Kinear), and dog form an unlikely friendship as the cranky, bigoted, obsessive-compulsive writer finds his life turned upside down. When Carol (Helen Hunt), the only waitress who will tolerate him, must leave work to care for her sick son making it impossible for him to eat breakfast, it makes it possible for him to fall in love.
