Latine Heritage Month Lecture Lunch

"Wait in Punishment: Visualizing Migration to the Mexico-U.S. Border"

Latine Heritage Month Lecture Lunch

As we celebrate Latine Heritage Month, join us for Campus Ministry's first lecture lunch of the academic year with keynote speaker Nancy Rios-Contreras, PhD. In her presentation, "Wait in Punishment: Visualizing Migration to the Mexico-U.S. Border," she will share stories and findings from her research and work on the border.

Presidential elections fuel a heightened discussion about Mexico-U.S. border crossings and national security. Using border participatory action research and visual photography in Tijuana, Rios-Contreras shows that the way authorized U.S. border entry is processed punishes migrant populations seeking asylum. She also will discuss violence in Latin America and inclusive approaches to support migrant well-being.

Rios-Contreras is the proud daughter of immigrants from Jalisco and Zacatecas. She is Cal Lutheran alumna with a BS in criminal justice and BA in sociology, who also earned a PhD in criminology from the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. She is a Bill Anderson Fund Fellowship alumna and a graduate affiliate for the Disaster Research Center.

Don’t miss the opportunity to join us for this meaningful lecture.
