About
Dr. Porter-Miller earned her A.S. in Addiction Disorder Studies from Oxnard College, her B.A. in Sociology from San Francisco State University, her M.S. in Addiction Counseling from Grand Canyon University, and her Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis on Cognition and Instruction from Grand Canyon University.
She began teaching as an adjunct professor at Oxnard College in the Addictive Disorders Studies Program in 2007 and continues to teach there. In 2014, Dr. PorterMiller came to CLU as an adjunct professor and taught the Criminal Justice Department’s upper-division Substance Abuse class. She began teaching psychology courses, as well as one Criminal Psychology class per eight week term, online as an adjunct at SNHU. In 2019, she came back to CLU to teach the CRIM Substance Abuse class for the Bachelor’s Degree for Professional’s program and just before the pandemic, began teaching various psychology courses in both the Traditional Undergraduate program and the Bachelor’s Degree for Professional’s program. In Spring 2023, she began teaching psychology courses as an adjunct at Oxnard College and in Summer 2023 began teaching psychology courses also as an adjunct at Ventura College. Outside of teaching classes, Dr. Porter-Miller is also a Certified Addictions Treatment Counselor and facilitates three groups every other week at an intensive outpatient substance use disorders facility.
Dr. Porter-Miller began with a clinical focus in addictive disorders, but has since focused on cognition and learning. She also focuses on biopsychology because she loves the brain! Psychology courses that she has taught include Learning and Memory, Abnormal Psychology, Criminal Psychology, Biopsychology, Social Learning Theory, and Theories of Personality.
Her current hobby, besides collecting classes to teach, is baking! Additionally, her mother is from Germany and her father was in the Army for 30 years, so she was raised (mostly in Germany) on a military base. She reports that it makes her an “Army Brat”!
