SOS: Recovering Our Past to Better Serve Our Communities

GSOE Dean's Speaker Series

SOS: Recovering Our Past to Better Serve Our Communities

As a part of the GSOE Dean's Speaker Series on Equity and Justice in Education, David G. García, PhD, will present a talk titled "SOS: Recovering Our Past to Better Serve Our Communities."

García is a historian and associate professor at the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies. His talk will explore work from his award-winning book, Strategies of Segregation: Race, Residence, and the Struggle for Educational Equality, which documents the long history of racially separate housing and unequal schooling for Mexican American and African American communities in Oxnard, California.

The presentation will highlight some of the interviews García conducted with community members and former students. His presentation will offer participants an opportunity to gain historical insights about the communities we aim to serve and to collectively discuss the continuities of segregation today.

García’s visit is being held in conjunction with Latine Heritage Month on campus, and his talk is co-sponsored by the Race and Ethnic Studies program, and the Division of Talent, Diversity, and Culture.
