Teaching in the Fifty and Better (FAB) program
Submitted by Sharon Boorstin
I have been teaching CLU-FAB programs for less than a year, and I’m really enjoying it. My courses are based on what I’ve learned over my decades of writing about travel, food, and other lifestyle subjects for the Los Angeles Times and the late LA Herald-Examiner, and magazines including Bon Appetit, Town & Country Travel, Forbes, and Smithsonian. As a former History teacher, I enjoy doing the research to create Power-Point presentations that delve back into the history of my subjects — whether it’s Highway 1, or legendary restaurants and hotels of Southern California. My students appreciate learning about the background of places they’ve been —or dreamed of going to — and recalling their personal memories of them. The fact that my students and I have lived through the same period in history — and in the same part of the world — makes it easy to have meaningful discussions.
