Bachelor’s Degree for Professionals
Submitted by Doug Thiel
I began teaching philosophy courses part-time at CLU in 2005. I had previously taught Administration of Justice Courses at Santa Barbara City College and was currently teaching philosophy courses part-time in the VCCCD since 1996. I retired with 25 years of service credits from the Santa Barbara Police Department in 2001. I have continued teaching in the VCCCD and at CLU post retirement to the present day. What I immediately appreciated at CLU was the sense of community that was fostered by the non-teaching staff. They provided a feeling of being at “home” and they make every effort to address the needs and concerns of students and instructors. While class sizes in the VCCCD were allowed to move from a maximum of 25 students to 40 students, CLU maintained a sense of community by continuing to maintain a maximum of 25. And while the VCCCD cancels class sizes of 15 or less, CLU had no such policy that allows enrolled students to be assured their chosen class selection will continue. For instructors, these smaller class sizes allow them to better understand their students and employ methods that will ensure academic success. I have mainly taught in the evening degree program at CLU (now known as the Professionals Program). Over the years, the majority of these students have been working adults who decide to make the sacrifice to attend evening classes in pursuit of a college degree. As an instructor, I admire their motivation and appreciate their willingness to balance work and family life. It has been a distinct pleasure to work with these conscientious individuals. I know how proud they are when they complete the course work necessary for their degrees. I also know that Ventura County residents are proud of the reputation earned by CLU over the years as a dedicated university that maintains high academic standards. I consider it an honor to be a part of this important service.
