The Echo
Submitted by Kirstie Hettinga
The Echo is Cal Lutheran’s award-winning student newspaper. This semester, The Echo has faced challenges above and beyond. Not only was the student staff adjusting to remote learning, but they were forced to move the entire publication to be exclusively online. The Echo staffers more than met this challenge—they thrived! Under the guidance of interim adviser Dr. Aaron Heresco, The Echo has continued to update the Cal Lutheran community on issues big and small and has continued to investigate tough topics and pursue stories of interest to our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
It is this perseverance and determination that has resulted in The Echo being recognized with 27 awards for excellence from the California College Media Association since 2014. Notably, in 2020, The Echo was recognized as the second-best student newspaper among publications from colleges and universities with enrollment under 15,000. Further, The Echo’s efforts to serve our diverse community was honored when El Eco, our Spanish-language insert, was awarded third place for best special section.
In particular I would like to recognize the editorial staff members who have led The Echo in the 2019-2020 school year:
