Latin American Student Organization (LASO)
Submitted by Leslie Madrigal '20
As a first-generation Latina undergraduate student, the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) helped me feel at home at Cal Lutheran. LASO hosts many community and campus events throughout the academic year, such as Día de los Muertos where we have an altar, pan dulce, Mexican hot chocolate, and sugar skull decorating. We also celebrate Las Posadas where we reenact the story of Mary and Joseph and students dress up and walk around the campus looking for shelter, we have performers, pan dulce, and raffles. Along with that, in the Spring semester we usually host an Appreciation Dinner for the Facilities and Housekeeping workers in which the club provides dinner, a folklorico performance, raffles, and we each write notes of appreciation for the workers. The cultural clubs serve as a representation for us to share our cultures with the broader Cal Lutheran community as well as serving as a space for students to feel at home.
