ASCENSO Hispanic Fellowship Presentations: Community Research in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion
The ASCENSO Hispanic Fellowship program started in 2022 out of a grant donation from the AMGEN Foundation. During the summer of 2022, four Cal Lutheran students joined as the first cohort of ASCENSO Fellows. The program aimed to provide all the resources needed to teach the students about issues of equity, diversity, inclusion and justice affecting Hispanic communities in Ventura County. The program also aimed to provide a space where the students could develop professionally through access to networks, support, and skill-building opportunities that would contribute to their development as community advocates and leaders. The event celebrates the students and showcases the projects built during their eight weeks working with the DEI Council of Ventura County.
Cal Lutheran community members in attendance will learn about the history of racism in Ventura County, how tobacco policy is disproportionately affecting Hispanic communities, how air quality affects the health of Hispanic communities, and how programs treating youth in recovery are currently serving our community. Presentations are about 20 minutes each followed by a 5–10-minute Q&A session. An awards presentation recognizing the students as ASCENSO Fellows and a reception with light refreshments will follow the student presentations.
