The Death of Civility: On the Birth of Interreligious Rituals of Resistance

An associate professor of interreligious education at Claremont School of Theology and director of the Center for Global Peacebuilding, Najeeba Syeed is recognized as a leader in peace building and social justice–based research. She has twice received the Jon Anson Ford Award for reducing violence in schools and was named Southern California Mediation Association’s Peacemaker of the Year in 2007 for work on interracial gang conflicts. Syeed’s peace and justice work has been the subject of news reports and documentaries.

In this lecture, Syeed offers a history of the use of appeals to civility to limit dissenting voices, and case studies in which Los Angeles faith leaders, responding to state violence, have developed interfaith rituals to challenge the detention of migrants.
